JOB DETAIL

Job Purpose The Employee Relations Specialist role reports directly to the Head: Employee Relations.

The incumbent of this role is required to equip line and Human Resources management to manage staff in the context of labour legislation and to ensure sound employee relations within SAA.

Principal Accountabilities  

Financial:
• Mitigate against financial losses as a result of industrial action
• Engage in cost management activities to ensure maximum benefits realisation

Operations Management:
• Draft collective agreements, policies and procedures
• Ensure collective bargaining and/or consultation with unions on behalf of the Company
• Facilitate/assist with conflict resolution
• Assist in the resolution of rights and interest disputes as well as give direction and support during strikes
• Consult and advise business partners on all ER issues e.g. disciplinary, grievance, incapacity and operational
requirements processes
• Give advice and professional guidance to and liaise with all levels of management, employees and unions
• Attend and/or facilitate meetings between line management and labour
• Represent the Company’s interest in CCMA cases and endeavour to have all awards in favour of SAA
• Brief/instruct attorneys in respect of CCMA or court processes on behalf of the company, as required
• Identify ER Training needs for HR and line and develop and present training programmes
• Create awareness and educate line management and other stakeholders in the application of policies and
procedures in line with business objectives and on relevant labour legislation
• Research and monitor legislation and case law in the field of Labour Relations
• Represent the company’s interests to maintain a good image and/or reputation in the market
• Proactively manage situations to mitigate against industrial action

Risk, Governance and Shareholder:
• Monitor compliance with labour legislation and align employment policies, practices and procedures with
legislation, as required
• Identify and manage risk, through continuous internal and external monitoring of business impact, as well as
changes in stakeholder needs and structures

Transformation:
• Support all BBBEE initiatives

Customer:
• Build and maintain sound working relationships with labour, employees, line management and relevant
stakeholders
• Represent the department to stakeholders and maintain professional, effective and amicable relationships
• Provide robust but constructive challenge to business stakeholders to maximise benefits realisation/ ROI and/or to
mitigate risks

People:
• Support human capital processes to deliver on strategic objectives
• Demonstrate productivity and performance excellence to achieve business objectives
• Support the discipline of process change and change management in SAA
• Support a high-performance culture and demonstrate performance excellence capability

Strategy Formulation and Implementation:
• Implement and monitor ER strategy and policies

Qualifications & Experience Formal Qualifications:
• Degree in Law or Human Sciences or equivalent qualification at NQF level 7

Years Experience:
• A minimum of 3 – 5 years’ extensive experience in Labour Law or Human Sciences, interaction with
unions at a managerial level in a comparable environment
• Experience in the Aviation industry will be an advantage
