PURPOSE OF THE JOB
You will be responsible for fabricating metal components from raw materials such as steel tubing to assemble structural forms.
These forms included but not limited to machinery frames, platforms, steps/stands, storage racks and tow hitches, in accordance with approved technical drawings and work instructions.
Thereafter, you will need to arrange for the painting of such equipment as applicable, by spray technique or otherwise, in accordance with such drawings and work instructions.
Furthermore, you will be responsible for repairing/refurbishing such equipment where relevant over the service life thereof.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
2.1 The minimum education requirement is a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent.
2.2 Must have completed a recognised apprentice programme in welding or boiler making.
2.3 Must hold a relevant trade certificate in welding or boiler making.
2.4 Must be thoroughly conversant with principles/techniques and tools/equipment employed in metal fabrication and welding/boilermaking.
2.5 Must be able to read, understand and apply technical drawings.
2.6 Should be able to work independently.
2.7 Will attend training as and when required to do so.
3.1 Adhere to the rules of the workshop, including workflow and housekeeping rules and procedures.
3.2 Adhere to the rules for work-related travel, including procedures for in-field maintenance work and timekeeping while working away from the primary workshop location.
3.3 Perform fabrication, repair and painting work accurately and in a timely manner as per issued work instructions.
3.4 The employee shall be accountable for ensuring operations are conducted in accordance with applicable regulations and standards of the Operator and within the confines of the AOC and relevant operational specifications.
3.5 Adhere to OHS rules in his/her area(s) of responsibility and accountability, including the timely reporting of safety-related hazards and incidents.
3.6 Where applicable, file reports on safety risks and security threats to company aircraft operations in a timely manner.
4.1 Layout, position and secure parts and assemblies in work according to relevant specifications, using tools such as but not limited to straight edge, combination square, calliper or ruler.
4.2 Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc or other welding equipment.
4.3 Cut workpieces using tools such as but not limited to power saw, hand shears or chopping knife.
4.4 Inspect grooves, angles or gap allowances on workpieces, using tools such as micrometres, callipers or other precision measuring instruments.
4.5 Remove “rough spots” from workpieces, using a portable grinder, hand file or scraper as applicable.
4.1 Weld workpieces in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
4.2 Heat, form and dress metal parts, using tools such as but not limited to: cutting torch or arc welding equipment.
4.3 Correctly operate and adjust cutting torches and welding equipment according to manufacturer instructions or industry best practices, as applicable.
4.4 Analyse technical drawings and other engineering specifications to plan and execute metal fabrication tasks/operations such as but not limited to layout, welding and assembly.
4.5 Develop templates and other work aids to hold and align workpieces under fabrication and/or assembly.
4.6 Where procedural information is unavailable, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry and welding techniques as necessary to determine required equipment and welding method.
4.7 Supervise or oversee a Welding Assistant & Painter where so delegated.
4.8 Responsibilities must be carried out in accordance with Company Standards as laid out in the manuals of procedure, and Occupational Health and Safety Standards.
4.9 Will assist with any additional tasks within the context of the job description.
