You will be responsible for assisting qualified artisans (welders or boilermakers) to fabricate metal components from raw materials such as steel tubing to assemble structural forms, such as but not limited to machinery frames, platforms, steps/stands, storage racks and tow hitches.
This will be in accordance with approved technical drawings and work instructions.
Thereafter, to undertake the painting of such equipment as applicable, by spray technique or otherwise, in accordance with such drawings and work instructions. Furthermore, to assist qualified artisans with the repair and/or refurbishment of such equipment where relevant over the service life thereof.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
2.1 The minimum education requirement is a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent.
2.2 Completion of a recognised apprentice programme will be advantageous.
2.3 Holding a recognised trade certificate will be advantageous.
2.4 Knowledge of principles/techniques and tools/equipment employed in metal fabrication will be advantageous.
2.5 Must be able to read and understand technical drawings.
2.6 Must have a minimum of 2 years work experience in welding or as a welding assistant.
2.7 Must have a minimum of 6 months experience in spray painting or other relevant industrial painting techniques
2.8 Should be able to work without direct supervision.
2.9 Will attend training as and when required to do so.
3.1 Adhere to the rules of the workshop, including workflow and housekeeping rules and procedures.
3.2 Adhere to the departmental rules for work-related travel, including procedures for in-field maintenance work and timekeeping while working away from the primary workshop location.
3.3 Perform fabrication, repair and painting work accurately and in a timely manner as per issued work instructions.
3.4 The employee shall be accountable for ensuring operations are conducted in accordance with applicable regulations and standards of the Operator and within the confines of the AOC and relevant operational specifications.
3.5 Adhere to OHS rules in his/her area(s) of responsibility and accountability, including the timely reporting of safety-related hazards and incidents.
3.6 Where applicable, file reports on safety risks and security threats to company aircraft operations in a timely manner.
4.1 Take measurements of and mark-up raw materials using tools such as but not limited to: straight edge, combination square or ruler.
4.2 Tack-weld under the supervision/direction of a qualified artisan, using electric gas and arc welding techniques.
4.3 Cut workpieces, using tools such as but not limited to: power saw or portable grinder.
4.4 Remove “rough spots” from workpieces, using a portable grinder, hand file or scraper as applicable.
4.5 Perform spray painting and brush painting as supervised/directed by a qualified artisan.
4.6 Responsibilities must be carried out in accordance with company standards as laid out in the manuals of procedure and Occupational Health and Safety Standards.
4.7 Will assist with additional tasks within the context of the job description.
